Comparing Geriatrics-Focused and Traditional Primary Care in VA Health System

Understanding the GeriPACT Model
Older veterans with complex health needs require specialized care. The Veterans Affairs (VA) health system introduced GeriPACT, a geriatrics-focused version of its traditional primary care model (PACT). GeriPACT teams are smaller and include specialists trained in geriatric care, aiming to improve patient quality of life and manage multiple health conditions effectively.
Study Findings: Quality of Care vs. Patient Experience
The study compared GeriPACT with traditional PACT by tracking patients over 18 months. GeriPACT patients received better screenings for falls, incontinence, and functional ability, indicating improved quality of care. However, there was no significant difference in “home time”—the amount of time patients spent at home versus in hospitals or care facilities. Additionally, patient-reported experiences, such as self-perceived well-being and care integration, showed no notable improvements with GeriPACT.
Implications for Future Care Models
While GeriPACT enhanced screening and assessment, it did not immediately improve patients’ overall health outcomes or independence. This suggests that while specialized geriatric care may offer benefits, longer-term studies are needed to determine its full impact. The results highlight the importance of refining care models to ensure both clinical effectiveness and patient satisfaction in aging populations.
